How much money does the energy industry receive in tax breaks?
The truth is, estimates range widely. With the federal deficit still a hot topic, and energy tax breaks playing a recurring role in budget negotiations, it seems important to have a handle on exactly how much energy producers get from the government. To gain a more precise accounting of these de facto subsidies, we are marshaling the expertise of lawyers, economists and tax professionals and compiling the information here in the Energy Tax Breaks Wiki. We are looking for any tax code section that specifically provides tax relief to energy producing companies.
We hope you'll contribute your energy tax breaks knowledge on these pages.
To enter a tax code section, enter the title, starting with the number, in the search box at the top right of the page. (Example: "38 - General business credit") If there is already a similar page, you have the option of editing it. If it’s a new section number, you'll see a link at the top of the results page that allows you to create the new entry. When you open the link you’ll be offered a template. Just click under each header and enter the relevant information. For questions or suggestions, email EdnaI@nyu.edu
For the purposes of this site, we're defining the term “Energy Tax Breaks” to mean those provisions of the tax code benefiting energy producing companies. Energy tax breaks are not limited to tax expenditures but include all forms of tax relief. We won't look to include the various subsidies that exist for energy consumers, although we recognize that they provide a financial boost to energy producers as well.
